Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, in recognition of the importance of the arts
and the emergence of New York as the home of many of America's most innovative and talented artists, began plans for the
Empire State Plaza Art Collection in 1961 and the first purchases were
made in 1966. This collection features the work of artists who practiced in New York during the 1960s and
70s, and is the most important State collection of modern art in the country.
Many of the artists in this collection are covered in the 20th century sculpture unit in seventh grade. |

The Bennington Museum features the work of Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860-1961), who became known to the world as Grandma Moses, one of America's most noted folk artists. Grandma Moses is studied in the eighth grade art history unit. |
The Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge |
The Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge houses the most significant public collection of Norman Rockwell's work in the world. The Museum's holdings include original artwork and the artist's studio and its related collection, including personal memorabilia, supplies, and reference materials. Norman Rockwell is covered in the eighth grade art history unit. |
Clark Art Museum 225 South Street

The Clark Art is know for its Renoir collection as well as other Impressionists like Monet & Degas. It also includes major works by American artists like Homer, Cassatt & Remington. All these artists are covered in the eighth grade art history unit. |
Albany Institute of History & Art |
The Albany Institute has an excellent collection of Hudson River paintings by Thomas Cole & Frederick Church amongst other landscape artists. This style is taught in the Atmospeheric Perspective drawing lesson in seventh grade. |

home of Hudson River artist Frederic Church. His home is a NYS
historic site which features tours and some original works.

The focus of
Storm King Art Center's distinguished permanent
collection of American and European modern sculpture is on large abstract welded steel works from the 1960's to the present,
although figurative works are also on view. A core group of thirteen sculptures by David Smith anchor a collection of
outstanding works by modern masters such as Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, and Louise Nevelson. The Art Center also has superb works by many other contemporary sculptors. Several of these artist are taught in the 20th
century sculpture unit in seventh grade. |

The permanent collection consists of approximately 2,800
paintings, sculpture, works on paper, furniture, and decorative arts.
Included are works by Leonardo DaVinci, Raphael, Rembrandt, Cezanne, Degas, Picasso, Renoir, Seurat, Turner, van
Gogh and Homer.
These artists are studied in both seventh and
eighth grade art history units. |
